There are a few housekeeping items that all Northwestern instructors should keep in mind to save time and effort when it comes to preparing for the upcoming term. Below, find quick links to some of the most important items to help ready you for the upcoming term.
Set Up Your Canvas Course
If you need to request a course combine for a multi-section course or a custom course site, please be sure to make those requests as soon as possible. It takes two to five business days to complete these requests.
When setting up next quarter’s courses in Canvas, it’s easy to pull content from previous courses you’ve taught into new courses. You can import course content, from a single item, such as a specific quiz or assignment, up to an entire course’s content.
Finally, starting December 16, the text editor in Canvas will have an updated look and feel. You can read more about the changes here. In general, all functionality remains the same, but the appearance, location, and behavior of some of the buttons has changed.
On-Demand Training Sites
Need to brush up on a topic to go into the next term feeling confident about the tech? Teaching & Learning Technologies has recently launched on-demand training that matches four of our core live workshops. Whether you’re the kind of person who’s most productive after business hours, has trouble focusing during a workshop via Zoom, or prefers to learn at your own pace, our on-demand training will give you access to the information you need to navigate Canvas, Zoom, and Panopto with confidence. Access the training sites via the buttons below.
If you’d prefer to attend a live workshop where you can ask questions directly, we offer those as well. Click the button below for the list of upcoming workshops. Registration is handled through Eventbrite.
Deleting Fall Quarter Zoom Videos
At the beginning of each quarter, all Zoom recordings made before the start of the preceding quarter will be moved to Zoom trash (a schedule and dates are available here). For instructors who have recorded asynchronous lectures in Zoom, it is recommended that the recordings be moved to Panopto, Northwestern IT’s lecture capture and video content management service.
- What recordings should you save? Any asynchronous lectures recorded and shared through Zoom (including in Canvas courses).
- What recordings should be deleted? Synchronous class sessions or recordings where students are present. These recordings should be deleted from Zoom at the conclusion of every term in accordance with guidelines from the Office of the Provost.
In addition, if you are copying a previous course into your new Canvas course, calendar links to previous Zoom meetings will appear on your Syllabus page once the course is published. To delete these past Zoom events from your current Syllabus page, click on the event link and click delete.
Have a quick Canvas question? Register for a 15-minute consultation with a learning engineer or learning technologist in Teaching & Learning Technologies. You can also ask the Canvas Support Chatbot for answers to common Canvas questions (and ask it to do things like create a prep site or increase the storage limit for your course).
