Guidelines for Recording Class Sessions

Review the guidelines for recording synchronous remote class content to ensure you are consistent with University policies.

Note that by default, recordings are not available for download. To learn about adjusting that setting, please visit the Understanding Zoom Privacy and Security Settings Knowledge Base article.

Guidelines on IT Security

In this world of interconnectedness and distributed information technology services, privacy of our community’s information is a concern that is closely managed by the University. All software purchased by the University goes through a security assessment process that covers the vendor’s data handling, encryption of stored data, breach notifications, and restrictions on the use of the data. The assessment is managed through the contracting process. The parties in the review process and contracting process include NUIT Information Security Office and Contracts office, and the Office of General Counsel.

For more information on IT security, see https://www.it.northwestern.edu/security/index.html.

Publishers and Vendors

Some publishers and educational technology vendors offer deals on technology, publications, and homework platforms. In many cases, these platforms have not been approved for use with Northwestern student data. To ensure the privacy of Northwestern University student data, use only the tools approved for use at the University. Most of these will be listed in the Canvas Resource Hub . If a tool you are interested in using is not listed there, please check with Teaching & Learning Technologies ( by sending an email to: canvas@northwestern.edu) and asking about the tool's status.
