Workshop Description:

Learning communities are valuable because they bring people together for shared learning, discovery, andthe generation of knowledge. This workshop will help graduate students and postdocs describe the relativevalue of learning communities and identify the characteristics of successful learning communities in eitherteaching or research settings. In the first workshop, participants explore research findings in guideddiscussion and describe the characteristics of effective learning communities. Between the first and secondsession, participants use a rubric to observe a learning community in action, returning to share theirobservations and collaboratively develop action plans for improvement and development.

Participants are expected to attend 2 sessions (April 4 and April 18). The first session is 90 minutes and the second session is 60 minutes.

Workshop Facilitator:

Professor Goldberg is the Director of the Searle Center for Advancing Learning and Teaching, Assistant Provost for Learning and Teaching and Professor of Physics and Astronomy.
