Participation Through Preparation: Planning to Get the Most Out of Your Classroom

The methods for generating great participation from students may seem confined to what we do in the classroom. This workshop encourages participants to think about participation in terms of the preparation that they put into each class session. Preparation includes writing at least one learning objective for each session and employing backward design to generate a scaffolded approach to reach that objective. Workshop participants will practice linking learning objectives to activities that increase participation using the backward design. When instructors break down the steps for achieving a learning objective into smaller, manageable goals, students are given the confidence to participate in the discussion of those goals.
