Is the route to human-level intelligence paved with Big Data?

Recent advances in machine learning, combined with the availability of very large data sets, have led to tremendous increases in the ability of computers to solve a number of complex tasks (like recognizing an object in an image, or understanding the structure of a sentence). The success of these machine learning techniques – particularly "deep neural networks" – has led many to predict that they will lead to both radically improved technology, and a better understanding of the human mind and brain. Do these models present a qualitative, or merely quantitative, shift in the ability of thinking machines? And what do their successes (and limitations) tell us about the nature of human thought?
