University Teaching Roundtable (UTR): Mining the Personal to Overcome Intellectual Insecurity

This University Teaching Roundtable will focus on the ways in which we can we tap into the life experiences of our students to create and maintain a classroom environment that is physically, emotionally, intellectually, and culturally safe and conducive to the free exchange of thoughts and ideas. We will consider how the inclusion of autobiographical exercises can diminish the insecurity that is often present in the classroom when a new or unfamiliar concept is introduced. Autobiography (writing the life of the self) enables students to make connections between the ways they construct meaning in the texts they read and write in class and the ways meanings are and can be constructed in other aspects of their lives.
