Implementing Intercultural Pedagogy Strategies in Online Learning
Workshop Description
Intercultural pedagogy refers to the range of teaching and curricular approaches that improve students’ abilities to communicate and work across cultural, social, and personal differences.
This workshop explores intercultural pedagogy and strategies to enhance its use in online classrooms. We will specifically delve into the concept of valuing assets that students bring to classrooms, one of several components of intercultural pedagogy.
Embracing an asset-based perspective, participants will acquire knowledge that can be useful to centering diversity, equity, and inclusion in their pedagogy and practice the application of intercultural pedagogy strategies in their own online teaching contexts.
Workshop Facilitators:
Rob Hill, PhD, is a Postdoctoral Scholar in the Searle Center for Advancing Learning and Teaching at Northwestern University. Rob earned a Ph.D. in Higher, Adult, and Lifelong Education from Michigan State University where they advanced teaching and curriculum initiatives in the College of Veterinary Medicine, Residential College in the Arts and Humanities, and LBGT Resource Center. At the Searle Center, Rob manages the Teaching Certificate Program and associated research and evaluation initiatives. They are also a member of Northwestern’s LGBTQIA Ally Training Committee.
Omari W. Keeles, PhD, MPH, is the Assistant Director for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at Northwestern University’s Searle Center for Advancing Learning and Teaching. Omari earned a B.S. in Psychology from Howard University, a M.P.H. from The George Washington University Milken Institute of Public Health, a M.A. and Ed.M. in Psychological Counseling from Teachers College Columbia University, and a M.S. in Psychology and a Ph.D. in the Combined Program in Education and Psychology from the University of Michigan. In his work at Searle, Omari develops, implements, supports and researches short and long-term initiatives around inclusion, equity and diversity for instructors at all levels, offering training around inclusive teaching, intergroup dialogues, and strategies for creating inclusive learning and research environments.
